About Oliver and his experiences
Oliver Shampine is currently…

… spending time with his dogs, Kuyper and Finn. He can also often be found working as a server at the Blue Porch in Grand Haven or studying Public Administration and Sociology at Grand Valley State University. Oliver also presides as an alternate member of the Zoning Board of Appeals in Grand Haven and is the current Youth and Children’s Director at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Oliver is committed to the engagement of all people in politics, especially younger votes. This commitment stems from his own early involvement in politics, driven by his care for his community and the planet. Despite being too young to vote, he wanted his voice to be heard and began by knocking on doors for a gubernatorial candidate, where he discovered the true essence of the political process: listening and genuinely hearing people.
From that pivotal moment, Oliver dedicated himself to politics. He became an intern for that gubernatorial candidate, has been a regular attendee of city-related meetings, and has volunteered in differing capacities for numerous campaigns ranging from the local to the presidential level. He also has experience as an intern with a Michigan State House Representative, as well as with the City Managers and City Planner of Grand Haven, where he gained valuable insights into governance and community planning, including the importance of fiscal responsibility.
Oliver values strong family connection and believes that supporting families is essential for a thriving community. It is also essential for a healthy democracy. Yet, he has seen so many in his community, especially families, suffering. In addition, the darkness of divisiveness has polluted and corroded our political landscape. As a result, Oliver really began to wonder why. His experiences as a Tri-Cities YMCA Summer Day Camp Counselor and his role as a Youth Ministry Director have shown him firsthand the brightness of children, their optimism, humor, and unique perspectives; how they care deeply about the world around them, their families, friends, and their futures. So, why must they suffer?
That’s Oliver’s question to you and his lifelong mission to address. Everyone deserves a chance to thrive, and it’s time we come together to ensure no one is left behind.
