I am running for office in District 10 because I, like so many others in our community, have witnessed the injustice and negligence of the current Board of Commissioners.
My faith guides my character and choices, inspiring me to run for public office in Ottawa County. As the Youth and Children’s Ministry Coordinator at St. John’s Episcopal Church, I aim to embody Jesus’s love in serving others. I respect the diverse faith traditions in our county and believe religious expressions are best suited for our churches and homes, not used by government officials to divide us.
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution underscores the importance of this separation to protect religious freedom. This principle was considered vital by the Founding Fathers like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who ensured that individuals could practice their faith without government persecution. Additionally, the first architects of the United States, such as the Pilgrims and Puritans, were a religiously-persecuted people who sought religious freedom. Our people’s history, combined with the biblical principle in Matthew 22:21, highlights the importance of separating religious and governmental affairs.
In our campaign, we believe that ‘A Divided Community Cannot Stand.’ As 1 John 4:7-21 reminds us, love and unity are our greatest weapons against oppression. This land, the very ground we stand on, holds the truth that together, as a united community, we can reclaim what is rightfully ours. When we stand firmly in our identity, as a people united, we are an undeniable force of positive change.
Today, we face unprecedented challenges. Our basic rights, our freedom, and our general welfare are under attack. The current political structure seeks to distract and divide us, but we must not falter. We must be the shield, not the sword. We must face the challenges with unwavering resolve, standing strong in the face of adversity.
The welfare of our families, the future of our children – these are at stake. We must come together, transcending the barriers that separate us, to build a better future.
As your commissioner, I pledge to uphold these values. I will work tirelessly to ensure justice and freedom for our people. Together, we can preserve our community and build a prosperous future for generations to come. Let us stand united, for a divided community cannot stand.
Thanks, be well, and walk in peace. – Oliver
