Oliver Shampine Wins District 10 Primary, Announces New Policy Pillar

Grand Haven, MI – Oliver Shampine emerged victorious in the District 10 primary election, securing the Democratic nomination for the Ottawa County Commission. Shampine expressed his deep gratitude to the voters of Grand Haven and District 10 for their support.

“I am incredibly thankful to the voters around Grand Haven and District 10 for advancing me through the primary,” Shampine stated. “I also want to extend my respect and appreciation to Douglas VanBennekom for the knowledge he brought to this race. His participation in this important process demonstrates the strength of our democratic system.”

Shampine acknowledged the widespread discontent with Ottawa Impact (OI) among voters across Ottawa County, noting the damage OI has inflicted on local governance. “Voters stood up in response to Ottawa Impact and the harm they’ve caused since seizing power locally. While OI is set to lose its majority, the threat they pose is far from over. We must remain vigilant, and I encourage all residents, including those in the Republican Party, to consider supporting Democratic candidates in races against OI-backed opponents.”

Shampine stressed the need for a brighter future for Ottawa County, one characterized by transparency, accountability, and collaboration. To this end, he announced the addition of a sixth policy pillar to his campaign: Clear and Engaged Governance.

This new pillar focuses on:

  1. Open Meetings and Accessibility: Ensuring all meetings are open to the public with clear, advance notice and accessible options, both in-person and virtually.
  2. Regular Communication and Educational Outreach: Maintaining consistent, transparent communication with the public and investing in educating residents about government processes.
  3. Public Involvement and Responsive Government: Providing multiple avenues for public participation and ensuring that county officials respond adequately to residents’ concerns.
  4. Financial Transparency and Ethical Standards: Publishing detailed budget and financial reports regularly and upholding high ethical standards among elected officials and county employees.
  5. Collaborative Partnerships and Innovation: Fostering close collaboration with local municipalities, non-profits, businesses, and other stakeholders to address community needs.

“These are just some of my plans to restore trust in our county government,” Shampine said. “We need to move forward and stay engaged. I will, and I hope you do too.”
